Flexible mullen Feather light Curated by C&H First allocation

Forged for the ride. Kept for life.

The first bit a young horse should ever meet — soft enough to say yes.

Trust is built in the first few bridles. A cold, rigid, jointed bit teaches a green horse to brace before it has learned to soften. The Soft Mullen does the opposite: a single flexible bar that bends with the jaw, warms to the mouth in seconds, and weighs almost nothing — so the horse meets the rein with curiosity instead of resistance. No joint to pinch, no edge to fear. The kindest place to begin, and a quiet refuge for any mouth that has learned to worry.

The difference is in the detail

Flexible Core

A mouthpiece that bends and gives with every movement of the jaw, so the horse is never met by something rigid.

Mullen Shape

One smooth, unbroken curve over the tongue — no joint, no nutcracker, nothing to pinch.

Warm to the Mouth

Takes the horse's body heat in seconds — none of the cold-steel flinch that makes a green horse brace.

Feather Weight

Barely there in the mouth, so a young or sensitive horse forgets it's wearing a bit at all.

Dee Cheek

Flat-sided stainless rings that hold the bit steady and add gentle, clear lateral guidance.

Seamless Surface

No edge, seam, or sharp corner anywhere near the lip — nothing for a worried mouth to catch on.

Tongue Room

The gentle curve leaves space to swallow and settle, so the mouth stays quiet and soft.

Why We Chose It

The kindest place to start a young horse, and a quiet refuge for any mouth that has learned to worry.

About
this bit.

A bit we've chosen for the house, and exactly why. Here's what you're registering interest in.

  • Maker: NATHE
  • Mouthpiece: flexible comfort mullen on a stainless core
  • Cheeks: stainless steel D-ring
  • Action: solid and flexible — no joint, even tongue pressure
  • Sizing: we'll help you fit before we order yours
Every comfort range needs a softest option, and this is ours: a flexible mullen that bends with the jaw, warms in seconds, and weighs almost nothing. It's the bit we'd reach for on a green youngster's first rides, or for a horse that has learned to fear a hard mouthpiece. It earned its place in the house by doing one thing better than anything else — being kind.
The flexible mouthpiece is easy to keep: rinse and wipe clean after each ride, and look it over now and then the way you would any soft mouthpiece, replacing it if you ever see a nick or wear. The stainless rings are maintenance-free. Stored well and checked often, it stays kind for years.
Measure your horse's current bit from inside ring to inside ring, or the mouth width with a bitting wand. Most warmbloods sit at 5"–5¼"; ponies and finer horses 4¾". Unsure? Register your interest and we'll help you fit before we order yours.
